Comfrey root (Symphytum officinale) is a traditional herbal extract applied topically to treat wounds and ulcers.

It was not until the 1800s that the ‘magic’ of comfrey root was discovered to be the phytochemical allantoin[1].

Today, allantoin is synthesised chemically to keep up with industrial demand, but is identical to its natural counterpart, which was widely used for its therapeutic properties in the past.

In the cosmetic industry, its most known use is for its effectiveness to help soothe irritated skin in both wash off and leave on cosmetic formulations.
