MyMicrobiome, the leading independent certification body specialising in microbiome-friendly cosmetics and textiles, introduces its standard 23.10 for the oral microbiome.
Recent research on the oral microbiome has focused on understanding its composition, diversity, and functional roles in health and disease.
The oral microbiome is crucial to health as it can cause both oral and systemic diseases. It rests within biofilms throughout the oral cavity and forms an ecosystem that maintains health in a state of equilibrium. However, certain imbalances in this state of equilibrium allow pathogens to manifest and cause disease. Disruption of the oral microbiome leads to dysbiosis and can contribute to systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections.
“Recent studies hint at a connection between the oral microbiome and plaque with cardiovascular diseases and Alzheimer ́s disease,” explains Dr. Kristin Neumann, CEO MyMicrobiome. ”Our Standard 23.10 Oral Microbiome certifies oral care products from mouthwash to toothpaste for microbiome-friendliness.”
The oral microbiome is dominated by a bacterial species called Streptococcus.
According to standard 23.10 oral microbiome, five Streptococcus microbes have been defined to test the oral care product, namely S. mitis, S. sanguinis, S. mutans, S. salivarius, S. anginosus.
A microbiome-friendly certified product guarantees to respect the balance and diversity of the microbiome and to leave it intact. A balanced oral microbiome is key for health in general.
