Almost 500 units of Mizani 25 Miracle Cream Leave-in Conditioner could be a B. cepacia contamination risk

L’Oréal USA has voluntarily recalled a leave-in conditioner under its Mizani brand over contamination fears.

The L’Oréal subsidiary initiated the recall of 487 units of its Mizani 25 Miracle Cream Leave-in Conditioner, packaged in 250ml plastic tubes due to potential contamination with Burkholderia cepacia complex.

The B. cepacia group (or complex) of bacteria poses little medical risk to healthy people, but can cause respiratory infections in those with certain health problems, such as weakened immune systems or chronic lung diseases.

The bacteria are often resistant to common antibiotics.

According to a US Food & Drug Association (FDA) event report, Mizani’s recalled units fall under Lot No. 48U401, Product No. P1895800, with the Recall Number F-0467-2024.

Mizani specialises in professional products for wavy, curly and coily hair.

It joined the L’Oréal USA line-up alongside Dark & Lovely and other brands as part of the beauty giant’s acquisition of Carson Products in 2000.

The brand’s Mizani 25 Miracle Cream Leave-in Conditioner – the recalled product – contains fennel seed oil and coconut oil to impart detangling and hydration to hair.

The FDA has issued cosmetics makers with numerous recalls associated with bacterial contamination.

Last year, Kao USA recalled affected lots of Jergens Ultra Healing Moisturizer, for which units could show the presence of Pluralibacter gergoviae, a species of bacteria.

Henkel likewise voluntarily withdrew 180 bottles of its Alterna Bond Repair Leave-in Heat Protection Spray in 2022 due to possible B. cepacia contamination.

And earlier this month, Johnson & Johnson voluntarily recalled at wholesale level 7,800 bottles of Clean & Clear’s Morning Burst Facial Cleanser due to microbial contamination.
