Weleda has spearheded an open letter, signed by microplastic-free beauty players, to the European Commission urging it to strengthen upcoming legislation to phase out microplastics from beauty products and tighten the proposed time-frame.

What is the definition of microplastic-free beauty?

From Weleda’s perspective, microplastic-free beauty means zero plastic inside. Many consumers still understand microplastics to be the solid, granular microbeads that were once widely found in cosmetics such as toothpastes, scrubs and other exfoliating products, which were banned from cosmetic products in the UK in 2018. But many consumers do not realise that beauty products are also manufactured using semi-solid or liquid synthetic polymers, which are also microplastics.
