‘Replace’ and ‘reuse’ are out in full force in Cosmetics Business’ pick of new packaging for March 2023.

From Morrama and PPK’s collaborative refillable packaging range Maya, developed with consumer behaviours in mind, to novel materials like Sulapac Luxe and Eastman Cristal One E Renew, which provide sustainable, luxurious alternatives to virgin plastics, here is a round-up of six packaging solutions and beauty packaging collabs.

1. Morrama/PPK, Maya

Industrial design and innovation consultancy Morrama and Shanghai-based packaging manufacturer PPK have collaborated on Maya, a refillable packaging range.

All packaging options in the Maya collection come with refills made from renewable cellulose pulp that can be recycled as paper waste at the end of life and are manufactured using renewable energy.

The Maya range’s Lipstick is based on research showing that most people rarely finish a lipstick, so the refills are designed to be removed and stored in separate board-based packaging like crayons. The user can then select the shade they want for the day and load it into the case.

Also included is a Makeup Palette, which comes in ten different sizes, with a refill pan that is fully compostable and, if it ends up in a landfill, will biodegrade without leaving any chemicals or microplastics.
